Singapore Will Have The Fastest Internet Speed

Yes, you heard right. Because of their small size and huge investments in infrastructure, Singapore will soon have a fiber optic network that will allow very rapid data transfer(the equivalent of a DVD in seconds). According to NY Times, the newest fiber optic network will accelerate the development of online services such as video and Internet telephony, and analysts expect the telecommunications sector to grow to 5.1 billion dollars by 2014 from 3.8 billion in 2009.

Investment of 700 million dollars from the government will help the small city of Singapore have an advantage in the race for the highest speed in the Internet world, a competition run by several Asian countries.
While in the rest of the world, authorities discuss the issue of investments in Internet infrastructure and trying to decide if they should be made private or public, Asian users already have access to a high speed network. Japan and Hong Kong are now among the countries with the best Internet infrastructure. Some private companies in these countries already offer speeds of 1 GB/s, far more than the 35 Mb/s needed to run a video in high definition. South Korea recently announced it would offer speeds of up to 1 Gb/s in all major cities of the country by 2013.  For building the infrastructure, the operators have received 750 million U.S. dollars in Singapore and must complete the network by the end of 2012. Until now, they installed fiber in 30% of the buildings in the city and plans to complete 60% of them until the end of the year.
